About maiz

maiz is – Self-organization – Participation – Autonomy – Resistance – Transformation – Utopia

We are an independent organization founded in 1994 by and for migrants. Our goal is to better the lives and work situations of migrant women* in Austria and to promote their political and cultural participation, as well as to transform the existing unjust social conditions.

maiz advocates for the recognition of sex work as a paid job and thus fights against the stigmatization, discrimination and criminalization of people who offer sexual services.

At the same time, anti-racist and queer-feminist commitment is an essential characteristic of our work. We continuously seek that activities in the sex work field are always guided by the needs of sex workers and at the same time aim to support the professionalization and self-empowerment of migrants in sex work.

What we want to achieve with and for migrants:

  • Improvement of the living and working conditions of sex workers
  • Creation of equal opportunities through anti-racist and anti-sexist work
  • De-tabooing of sex work and decriminalization of sex workers
  • Destigmatization and non-discrimination through the reduction of prejudices and the recognition of sex work as paid job
  • Professionalization and self-empowerment of migrant sex workers Promotion of the social network among sex workers
